Gates of The Mountains, Montana
Location
Gates Of The Mountains is in central Montana, north of Helena, on the Missouri River. Follow the signs from I-15.
Description
When the Lewis and Clark Expedition made its way up the Missouri River in Montana, they reached a place north of the present-day town of Helena where the rocks on either side of the river appear to open up like a gate, revealing the mountains ahead. The spot became known as "Gates of The Mountains".
A boat ride on this part of the Missouri is available, and highly recommended.
