USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
We far preferred West Point to the town of Starkville. After searching round Starkville for a suitable motel for some time we thought it was a very run-down and depressing town. We stopped in a gas station and the attendant advised us to try West Point instead, agreeing that we wouldn't find anything in Starkville.
Despite being shown on some maps as if it were a town, Mississippi State near Starkville is just a university campus with no facilities for tourists.
I have also received a comment saying that there are far more facilities for tourists in Starkville on US12 than on US82. This is borne out by a fair number of restaurants and a few motels being shown along that road in Microsoft MapPoint.
I was saddened to recently read your opinion of Starkville, Mississippi in relationship to your visit to West Point, Mississippi. The city of Starkville strives to be as helpful as possible to any and all tourists. We are a growing town with our population increasing, our university growing and new and exciting additions to the community every day. We have a wide variety of restaurants, specialty museums and a beautiful wildlife refuge practically on our doorstep. If you should visit the area again please do not hesitate to phone the Starkville Area Chamber of Commerce or Visitors and Convention Council at 1-800-959-9978. You may also view our website at www.starkville.org. Please do not hesitate to phone if you have additional questions. Sincerely, Tamra Swann, Special Events Coordinator
Greetings from Starkville, Mississippi. My name is Joan Friedman, and I am the executive director of the Starkville Visitors and Convention Council. I was sorry to hear about your negative experience in Starkville. We make every effort to make visitors feel welcome and are proud of the attractions we have to offer. I do not know when you visited our city, but I would encourage you to return. We have a number of new restaurants, shops, attractions, and events. Our web site, www.starkville.org has a lot of information and was just expanded to include our newsletter and press releases. Our town was just featured in Southern Living Magazine as well. Again, on behalf of my office and the community, I apologise for any problems you may have had in Starkville and invite you back. I look forward to being of service to you. Joan Friedman
