Natchez, Mississippi

Pronunciation

Natch-ez. The name comes from the Natchez Native American tribe who lived in the area.

Location

Natchez is in southwestern Mississippi, very near the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway. The Natchez Trace Parkway terminates and joins US61 a few miles north and slightly east of Natchez, so if you're approaching on the Parkway then you will enter Natchez on US61.

Natchez is on the east bank of the Mississippi River and therefore it also lies on the Great River Road.

Description

Natchez is a fairly large town so if possible it's well worth obtaining a map before visiting.

The outskirts of Natchez are quite pleasant and have all the usual facilities for visitors.

The majestic bridge to the immediate west of Natchez crosses the Mississippi and leads to Louisiana. It is toll-free and affords a spectacular view.

The Natchez riverfront area with its casino riverboats is worth a look.

However, when I visited in 1997 the old central downtown area of Natchez was sadly extremely run-down, and I observed some grim reminders there that not all parts of America are prosperous.

In March 2003 Donna Jones sent me the following email message which I'm very pleased to be able to include on this page:

I'd like to report that, thankfully, the situation in our town has changed drastically, and we would love to get a more attractive description of our town on your site.
I am writing about Natchez, Mississippi. It appears it was some time before 1999 when you visited. I am happy to report that downtown Natchez has been revitalised. It is now thriving with gift shops, antiques shops, furniture stores, restaurants, and a brand new convention centre. Your description also doesn't mention the dozens of antebellum homes (pre Civil War plantation mansions) which are our main draw.
I would be happy to email you some photos or whatever it takes to show you that things have improved around here. Unfortunately, we have lost several major industries in the last couple of years. Tourism is our main industry, and we've got to keep it up to keep people coming to Natchez to keep our people employed!
We also ask that you add our website, http://www.natchezms.com, to the external links for Natchez. We are currently working with our city and convention and business bureau to combine their efforts with ours to offer the visitor B and B, hotel, restaurant, attraction and event information. Please check out our website.
