Kosciusko, Mississippi

Location

Kosciusko is in central Mississippi, on the Natchez Trace Parkway north of Jackson.

Description

We popped off the Parkway to visit the Kosciusko Chamber of Commerce Information Centre, and what little we saw of the town looked quite good.

Historical Note

Kosciusko is presumably named in honour of the Polish military leader and national hero Thaddeus Kosciusko, who fought not only for Polish freedom but also on the side of the colonists during the American Revolution. Australia's highest mountain, Mount Kosciusko, is also named in his honour. During his time in America, Kosciusko ordered the construction of fortifications at West Point, New York State, later to become the famous military academy. The Chamber of Commerce in Kosciusko, Mississippi, has a display about the West Point Military Academy. Presumably the nearby town of West Point, Mississippi derives its name for this reason.
