However, when we decided to try a motel in the Budgetel chain again in 1997 we found it expensive and the front desk staff extremely inefficient and rude, in particular failing to give the senior citizen discount on the bill to which they had agreed when we checked in. To be fair, the room itself was very good and we later obtained a full refund from Budgetel themselves when we wrote to complain.
So we can only suggest that you try Budgetel, but with some degree of caution. Our single poor experience may have been due to that location being near a big city and catering mainly for business travellers on expense accounts who don't check their bills, or it might have been one rogue location, or it might possibly have been more representative of the chain as a whole.
In 1995 Budgetel's prices tended to come between those of Motel 6 and Super 8, but in 1997 we found them well above Super 8.
In January 1999 Budgetel were renamed as Baymont Inns and Suites.
The new Baymont Inns and Suites central reservations number (toll-free) is 1-800-301-0200. This is a toll-free US number. From the UK dial 001-800-301-0200, and normal international call rates apply.
Judging by the copy of the press release announcing this change published on their web site, the change of name appears to be an attempt to move even further upmarket so as to further attract the lucrative business traveller/expense account market. A comment sent by a visitor to this site confirms this and says that rates have risen considerably since the change of name.
