Money Arrangements for a US/Canadian Holiday - US and Canadian Cash

It's a good idea for visitors from abroad to take a small amount of cash to start with, for example for road and bridge tolls.

It is difficult to give any specific advice as to the least expensive sources of US or Canadian cash in this document since the market is very changeable. For visitors from Britain the best bet is to shop round the travel agents, banks and building societies, not forgetting the Post Office.

Payment for foreign currency in the UK by means of a credit card invokes a commission charge payable to the credit card company; this is 2% (as at May-98 according to a Cooperative Bank leaflet relating to the use of their Visa Gold Card).

Payment for foreign currency by means of a debit card may possibly be a slightly less expensive option but I haven't researched it.

If you live in a country where they operate, then a credit union may well be your least expensive source of foreign currency.
