Maryland has one of the most convoluted shapes of any state. Two sections in the west are almost cut off by West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and Maryland also occupies part of the Delmarva peninsula. Chris Whong's research paper The Boundary Disputes of Colonial Maryland details Maryland's various boundary disputes during colonial times, explaining the present-day state's convoluted shape. It includes mention of the original Mason-Dixon Line and the Transpeninsular Line, amongst other boundaries. External link verified Jun-03.
