John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

American English to British English Dictionary - Z

Zee

Zed (how the name of the last letter of the alphabet is pronounced - "zed" in Britain, "zee" in the USA). Hence constructions such as EZ or E-Z (easy) and Lay-Z (lazy).

I received an email saying that in Canada the letter Z is pronounced "zed" as in Britain, but phrases such as E-Z and Lay-Z are also used.

ZIP Code

Postcode. ZIP stands for "Zone Improvement Program" but that is a very obscure piece of knowledge. An all-digit code is used, with low numbers in the east and high numbers in the west.

"Zoonarmy"

Actually "tsunami", but pronounced something like "zoonarmy". See separate article.

Zucchini

Courgette (the vegetable).

Zydeco

A blend of African and Cajun music.
