American English to British English Dictionary - Q
QC
According to Canada Post (the Canadian Postal Service), the official abbreviation for the Province of Québec is QC. In addition, several official web sites associated with the Province of Québec have the domain name .qc.ca.

QSR
Quick Service Restaurant. A term used in the trade to refer to a fast food restaurant.

Quarter
Twenty-five cents coin. A quarter is roughly the same shape and colour as a nickel but has a milled edge.
Quarter-Horse Racing
A type of horse racing which consists of a short sprint over a quarter of a mile, or approximately
that distance. Presumably a quarter-horse is a type of horse which is bred specifically for such races.

Québec
To avoid any ambiguity, it is best to clearly distinguish between Québec City and the Province of Québec.
Queen Bed
A bed which is larger than a normal bed but not quite as large as a King bed.
Quesadilla
A Mexican cuisine item. A soft flour tortilla (or, probably more likely, two tortillas) filled with melted cheese, sauce and perhaps pieces of chicken or beef. The quesadilla offered by Taco Bell has roughly the same appearance as a pizza, with slices. Taco Bell also have a breakfast quesadilla, filled with scrambled egg, melted cheese and sauce, plus optionally sausage or bacon. Most of the other Mexican fast food chains also offer regular and breakfast quesadillas.
Quite
Kirk Uhlmann of Kansas City emailed me to say that in the USA, if you say that something is "quite good," you mean that it's very good. In Britain, "quite good" means that it is fairly good, or mediocre. However, in Britain, to say that someone is "quite right" or "quite correct" means that (in your opinion) they are totally correct.
