Nickname
Indiana has the official nickname the Hoosier State.
There are several explanations for the name, including:
- The inhabitants were in the habit of greeting strangers with the question "Who's you" (who's yer?).
- Some early explorers to the region were led by a man called Hoosier (or a similar name).
- Jeff Hargiss sent me this theory: "Hoosier (hoozer) is from the Cumberland dialect of England and means "highlander" or "hill-dweller". The early inhabitants of Indiana were referred to in this manner due to the bluffs on the Ohio River, according to the Indiana Historical Society."
