Recommended First Night Accommodation for Las Vegas, Nevada
Motel 6, at the intersection of Tropicana and Koval Lane
Despite its proximity to the airport and the fact that it is the largest motel in the world, it is fairly quiet.
It is possible to walk from this motel to the Tropicana casino.

Super 8, a few miles north on Koval Lane
It is possible to walk from this motel to Bally's Casino (on the Strip, backing on to the other side of Koval Lane to the motel; there is a side entrance to Bally's on the road between Koval Lane and the Strip just north of the motel and Bally's). From Bally's a free monorail runs to and from MGM, which is worth a visit. Unfortunately the area the monorail runs over is currently (summer 1999) a disorganised-looking and ugly building site, and the monorail gives a far from smooth ride, but it is still a worthwhile experience. According to some descriptions there is a pedestrian walkway over the Strip from MGM to some other casinos - we never found it. Entrance to MGM's Theme Park is no longer free, by the way.

Other Comments
There are several restaurants and other facilities on Maryland Parkway, which runs north-south parallel to the Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) a few blocks to the east of it.
On one occasion we flew to Las Vegas since it was significantly less expensive than San Francisco or Los Angeles, even though the outward trip was via San Francisco and the return via Los Angeles!

The above are only some ideas - there are of course a vast number of other possibilities.
