USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
The further north you get, the later spring comes, and so the later the high passes over the Rockies open. Although airfares are even less expensive earlier and later in the year, at these times winter conditions will prevail in the mountains and the north.
The further south you get, the earlier it starts to become unacceptably hot. In Florida and Texas mid-summer is far too hot for most people's tastes and spring or autumn would be better, or even perhaps winter for the southernmost destinations. Parts of Florida and the southern tip of Texas can often have daily maximums in the 70's or 80's (Fahrenheit) even in January and February, while in Minnesota and North Dakota at that time of the year the daily highs might only be in the 10's (Fahrenheit).
Colleges and universities are normally in session from early September to mid-May while the US school holidays typically run from mid-June to Labour Day weekend in early September, meaning that the summer tourist season tends to run from Memorial Day (late May) to Labour Day (early September) with the peak period being mid June to the end of August. We have certainly noticed that there is considerably more pressure on accommodation at the end of June than at the start of that month.
Although this web site doesn't cover the subject, don't forget the possibility of a winter skiing holiday in the USA or Canada.
There's more information on the Climate page.
