Both in terms of the risk of being mugged and in terms of road safety, in all but the big cities, the answer to this question is undoubtedly yes. You may of course be unlucky, but the chances are extremely remote if you take the usual common-sense precautions.

There are obviously some parts of some of the big cities where there is an increased risk of being robbed and these places are best avoided unless you are accompanied by a guide with local knowledge.
