FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions For Visitors To The USA And Canada - Isn't the USA all dry and barren desert?

No, far from it.

There are large areas of the western USA which are desert or semi-desert, but when accepted for what they are these have a beauty of their own. Don't make the mistake of writing off the desert as being uninteresting.

Even in the west the Rocky Mountains, the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the Cascade Mountains all have extensive areas of alpine-like scenery with woods and forests.

Some 32% of the total land area of the USA and some 49% of Canada is officially classified as being forested. Vast areas of the southern, more populated regions of Canada are forested.

Throughout the USA and Canada there are also extensive areas of farmland.

East of the Mississippi there are no barren areas at all in the USA and instead there are many regions with extensive and lush vegetation.

The USA and Canada are extremely varied in terms of landscape, vegetation, climate and many other respects.

There's more information about deserts in the Deserts section.
