Driving In The USA And Canada - Valet Parking

Unless you stay in extremely expensive hotels, the only places the normal tourist will encounter valet parking is at some of the casinos in Las Vegas. This is how the system works, according to a friend who mailed me this description:
You drive in, pull up and hand the valet your car keys. He gives the car a once over and notes any obvious damage (so they don't get sued) and then hands you a receipt and drives off. To get your car back you hand in your receipt to the valet booth and they give you back a tear off slip from the receipt. Between 30 seconds and 10 minutes later your car appears. You hand over your slip and the valet gives you your car keys back. In Las Vegas valet parking is free and very convenient. A tip of 1 to 2 Dollars is expected - although if you were not going back you might get away with none (!). A few of the casinos have a no tip policy and you may have the strange experience of having your tip handed back.
James Cloninger of Columbus, Ohio kindly sent me these comments:
You may also find valet parking at some shopping malls, or restaurants which have very limited parking spots. Often they only charge $1-3. Some don't charge at all, but tips are welcome.
