Driving In The USA And Canada - School Zones
The information on this page, although extensively checked and believed to be correct, is completely unofficial and is provided for general guidance purposes only.
A school zone is a section of road near to a school.
In Illinois school zones are subject to the following regulations, which I would imagine also apply in other states although the details may differ.
- School zones are subject to a speed limit of 20mph but this usually only applies at certain times of the day when schools are in session, or when children are present, or when warning lights are flashing. Signs will normally indicate this information. In California the speed limit is 25mph.
- No overtaking is permitted in school zones.
School road signs are in a shape of a pentagon with its point at the top. The actual shape is a rectangle with a triangle on top and is meant to resemble a traditional schoolhouse building. Older school signs have a yellow background while more modern signs have a yellow/green florescent background. In both cases the foreground text and/or image are in black.
A school road sign showing two children walking indicates that you are in the vicinity of a school and/or one or more school crossings.
A school road sign showing two children walking in a crossing (the crossing is depicted by two horizontal parallel lines) indicates a school crossing.
