Low price petrol station chains in the USA include Arco, Citgo, Loves, Maverik, Mustang and Trailside. The number of Citgo locations seems have reduced drastically in the last few years.
Many small regional and local chains and independent petrol stations offer lower prices than the big national and international brands.
Petrol prices vary quite considerably from region to region and sometimes even within a region. The national highest price is often well over double the national lowest price.
Areas of the USA which appear to consistently have the highest prices include Hawaii and California, especially the San Francisco area.
Areas of the USA which appear to consistently have the lowest prices include Georgia.
We recorded some petrol prices per US gallon during our holiday to the USA in April 2001, as follows. Although this information is now long since out of date, it does indicate the considerable variation in the price for petrol between different places.

As in the USA, petrol prices in Canada vary quite considerably from region to region and the national highest price is often well over double the national lowest price.
Provinces of Canada which appear to consistently have the highest prices include British Columbia, Québec and Saskatchewan.

Petrol prices are rather higher in Canada than in the USA, even allowing for the difference rate of exchange between the two countries' currencies. Because of the difference in the exchange rates and because petrol is sold by the US gallon in the USA and by the litre in Canada, comparisons of the prices in the two countries involve some calculations.
