Driving In The USA And Canada - Hand Signals

The information on this page, although extensively checked and believed to be correct, is completely unofficial and is provided for general guidance purposes only.

The following information is from the Oct-98 printed edition of the Illinois Driver's Handbook "Rules Of The Road" but I would guess that it applies throughout the USA.

All hand signals should be made with the left arm, through the open driver's window.

To indicate that you intend to turn right, extend your left forearm and hand upwards with the palm of the hand facing forwards.

To indicate that you intend to turn left, extend your left forearm and hand leftwards with the palm of the hand facing forwards.

To indicate that you intend to slow down or stop, extend your left forearm and hand downwards with the palm of the hand facing backwards.
