Driving In The USA And Canada - Funeral Processions

The information on this page, although extensively checked and believed to be correct, is completely unofficial and is provided for general guidance purposes only.

You must yield to a line of vehicles in a funeral procession and not enter the procession.

The vehicles in a funeral procession will all have their headlights on. However, since many cars now have daytime running lights it can be impossible to tell that they are in a funeral procession.

James Cloninger of Columbus, Ohio kindly sent me these additional comments:

Often, the lead car is a hearse, followed by a limousine, usually escorted by a patrolman on a motorcycle (who will drive ahead and stop traffic). All the cars in the procession will have headlights on and purple "Funeral" flags magnetically attached to their car hoods. And they will tie up traffic for fifteen minutes as they trundle on at 5 mph.
Nicholas Brooks of Toronto, Ontario sent me these comments:
In Ontario, vehicles in a funeral procession, apart from being marked by white "funeral" cards on their hoods, visible 'side one' will also have their four way flashers on. They might also be accompanied by marked police cruisers or vehicles with flashing purple light bars on the roof.
