USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
Assuming that they have the owner's permission, visitors from other countries need to check two vital factors before driving a friend's or relative's car while visiting the USA or Canada.
Driving Licence requirements are identical to those required for a visitor to the USA or Canada to drive a rental car.
Insurance is, however, a potential problem. Any insurance policy held by the visitor in their own country is most unlikely to cover them for driving another car in the USA or Canada, although it might be worth checking this point with your insurance company. Therefore it is vital that the vehicle's owner checks with their insurance company. I'm informed that the position varies and so the visitor may or may not be properly covered. I suspect that as well as the nature of the insurance policy, the law may possibly differ in this regard in different states.
