However, conventional roads often form more interesting and more scenic alternatives. Naturally they are significantly slower than Interstates.
In large cities Interstates and other freeways can often be very busy roads with fast moving traffic. The frequent need to change lanes and the constant need to avoid being caught in an "Exit Only" lane can make them very stressful. If you have sufficient time, then taking a conventional road may be a more pleasant experience for both the driver and the passengers. However, the time taken to pass through a city on a conventional road will be very much greater than on a freeway.
Conventional roads in towns and cities are often called surface roads or surface streets, in contrast to the freeways which are often elevated.
