Combinations Of Road Type Names In The USA

The information on this page, although extensively checked and believed to be correct, is completely unofficial and is provided for general guidance purposes only.

This page attempts to summarise the combinations of road type names found in the USA, which can initially be rather confusing for a visitor from another country.

Interstate Highway Divided highway with controlled access (a freeway, an expressway, or in UK English a motorway) Very common.
Interstate Highway Divided highway but not controlled access (in UK English this would be called a dual carriageway) I do not know of any examples.
Interstate Highway Non-divided highway, paved I do not know of any examples.
Interstate Highway Non-divided highway, unpaved I can't see this combination ever existing, except in construction zones (road works).
US Highway Divided highway with controlled access (a freeway, an expressway, or in UK English a motorway) Common, especially major US highways both in towns and outside.
US Highway Divided highway but not controlled access (UK English: dual carriageway) Very common, especially in towns.
US Highway Non-divided highway, paved Very common.
US Highway Non-divided highway, unpaved Very rare. I cannot think of any examples, except in construction zones (road works).
State Highway Divided highway with controlled access (a freeway, an expressway, or in UK English a motorway) Rare, except for some freeways in large cities, for example in the Los Angeles area.
State Highway Divided highway but not controlled access (UK English: dual carriageway) Fairly rare.
State Highway Non-divided highway, paved Very common.
State Highway Non-divided highway, unpaved Rare, except in construction zones (road works), but there probably are some examples.
County Road Divided highway with controlled access (a freeway, an expressway, or in UK English a motorway) I do not know of any examples.
County Road Divided highway but not controlled access (UK English: dual carriageway) I do not know of any examples.
County Road Non-divided highway, paved Common.
County Road Non-divided highway, unpaved Common.

Divided Highway Controlled Access Very common (a freeway, an expressway, or in UK English a motorway).
Divided Highway Not Controlled Access Very common (UK English: dual carriageway).
Not Divided Highway Controlled Access A very unusual combination. I can only think of two examples, the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natchez Trace Parkway, although there may be some others.
Non-Divided Highway Not Controlled Access Very common (a two-lane road, a conventional road, a normal road).
