Derivation of Name
The state of Delaware, Delaware Bay and the Delaware River are all named in honour of Thomas West, the third Baron De La Warr, the first colonial governor of Virginia. The Delaware Indians were so-called by Europeans because they lived alongside the Delaware River; they called themselves Lenape or Leni-Lenape, which meant "true men" in their own language.
