Dams in the USA and Canada - Introduction
There are a number of very impressive and interesting dams in various parts of the USA and Canada, each of which is usually worth a visit if you are in the area.
In the vast majority of cases some form of tour of the dam is available, often free of charge.
These dams were built in each case for some combination of flood control, irrigation, facilitation of river navigation and hydro-electric power generation. The lakes created by dams are in many cases used for recreational purposes, and a dam also often forms a bridge over its river.
The list of dams included in this section is far from exhaustive.

Detailed information on many of the dams in the USA can be obtained from the following official web sites:

- United States Bureau Of Reclamation. The Bureau Of Reclamation is responsible for many aspects of water resource management in the West, including numerous dams, hydroelectric schemes and water distribution systems. Some USBR facilities are open to the public. Their web site has plenty of information about the USBR dams. Verified May-04.
