Hungry Horse Dam, Montana

In my opinion Hungry Horse Dam is one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of the USA and Canada.

Location

A few miles from the town of Hungry Horse, Montana, which is not far from the western entrance to Glacier National Park. The short drive from the town to the dam is scenic.

River

South Fork of the Flathead River. This dam retains Hungry Horse reservoir, which forms part of the upper Columbia River system.

Type Of Dam

A high concrete arch dam. Hungry Horse dam is an enormous and most impressive structure.

Statistics

Height: 564 feet.

Length at top: 2115 feet.

Thickness at base: 320 feet.

Thickness at top: 34 feet.

Volume of concrete: about 79 million cubic feet.

Construction: 1948 - 1953; modified 1994 - 1995.

Visitor Centre And Parking

There are exhibit rooms and a small visitor centre, with an extensive free parking area, located near one end of the top of the dam.

Dam Tours

Self guiding tours of the interior of the dam are no longer available. However, free guided tours of the outside of the dam are available. Details can be obtained from the visitor centre. It is still possible to freely stroll across the top of the dam and enjoy the wonderful views.

Other Information

Kami Grundmeier kindly sent me this email:
As a tour guide at Hungry Horse Dam I thought this would be useful information:
Hungry Horse Dam is an arch gravity type dam, 564 feet tall, spanning 1125 feet across the canyon of the South Fork River.
The reservoir is 37 miles long, with fishing and camping access all of the way around it. The road is 115 miles long with only 15 miles being paved.
Also, as a tour guide I thank you for mentioning that tours are no longer taken within the dam. This saves a lot of heartache for everyone.
In August 2004 I received this message from Dave and Claudia Tester:
Additional information concerning Hungry Horse Reservoir in Montana:
The Bureau of Reclamation will soon release a video tour with interactive elements at the visitor's centre for the dam site.
Dave Walsh at the Bureau of Reclamation office Boise, Idaho is producing the project.
