Glen Canyon Dam, Arizona
Location
In Marble Canyon. Near the town of Page, Arizona. Page is due north of Flagstaff, very close to the Utah line.
River
Colorado. The construction of the dam created Lake Powell and hence the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Lake Powell is named after John Wesley Powell, the man who led the first European expedition through the Grand Canyon.

A high concrete arch dam.
Statistics
Height: 710 feet.
Length at top: 1560 feet.
Thickness at base: 300 feet.
Thickness at top: 25 feet.
Volume of concrete: about 130 million cubic feet.
Construction: 1957 - 1964.
Drainage area: 108,335 square miles.
Length of Lake Powell: 185 miles.
Surface area of Lake Powell: 250 square miles.
Glen Canyon is the third highest dam in the USA, and the highest arch dam.
Parking
Extensive free parking area.
Visitor Centre
There is a very impressive visitor centre with exhibits and excellent views of the dam and the bridge.
Dam Tours
Guided tours of the dam are available, but I can't remember if there is a
charge.
Comments
This dam's visitor facilities are busy but not congested. They have been designed to cope with a large number of people.

- There is also a magnificent steel girder road bridge over the river adjacent to the dam, which carries US89.
