John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
In the USA and Canada, National Parks are large areas of government owned wilderness on which there is no private property and the absolute minimum of development.
In most cases there is an entrance fee for each park but no charges for car parking. In some Canadian National Parks you only need to pay an entrance fee if you will be stopping within the park.
All National Parks have visitor centres which are essential sources of information, especially for first-time visitors to a park.
A few of the most popular US National Parks offer free shuttle bus services for visitors, to reduce traffic levels. These are always worth making full use of.
Most National Parks offer a range of accommodation but this tends to be relatively expensive and often fully booked. I therefore feel that it is better to seek accommodation at a town near a park. Almost all of the parks also have campsites.
The United States National Park Service is also responsible for many other similar areas including the National Monuments.
In Canada, the National Parks are administered by Parks Canada.
