Summary of Costs of a Fly/Drive Holiday From the UK to the USA in the Summer of 1996

In June 1996 we flew from Norwich to Amsterdam with Air UK (now called KLM UK) and from Amsterdam to Los Angeles with KLM, using a Northwest Fly/Drive (now called Fly Drive USA) package.

We spent three weeks touring southern California (including Joshua Tree National Park and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park), Arizona (including Saguaro National Park), New Mexico (including Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, White Sands National Monument and Carlsbad Caverns National Park), western Texas (including Guadalupe Mountains National Park and Big Bend National Park), southern Colorado (including the Great Sand Dunes National Monument and the San Juan Skyway) and southern Utah (including Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon National Park and Cedar Breaks National Monument).

The following costs are for the three weeks, for three adults. Where relevant all the costs are for all three of us combined, NOT per person. Please bear in mind that your costs in the USA and Canada may vary considerably depending on your lifestyle.

Average motel costs in the USA were US$44 total for three adults per night.

USA Car Details

The car was a four door Oldsmobile Cutlass Cruiser.

We drove 6459 miles in three weeks.

The average petrol consumption was 29 miles per US gallon.

The average petrol price was US$1.38 per US gallon, equivalent to UK£1.16 per Imperial UK gallon.

Big Mac Price

In the summer of 1996 the price in the USA of that universal world-wide measure of the cost of living and inflation, the Big Mac, was US$1.99. This is the price for the sandwich alone, not a meal.
