Royal Gorge, Colorado

Location

Royal Gorge is located just off US50 a few miles west of Cañon City, southwest of Colorado Springs.

Description

Royal Gorge is a tourist attraction for which there is an entrance charge. It is not a National Park Service unit or a state park. When we visited you could elect for a different ticket depending on which combination of the various attractions you wished to make use of.

The extremely narrow and high Royal Gorge was cut by the Arkansas River which flows through it.

The world's highest suspension bridge, built in 1929, crosses the chasm 1053 feet above the river. When we visited the bridge was closed to cars but open to pedestrians.

There is also a cable-car across the gorge.

An incline cliff railway runs from the rim down to the river.

There are a number of other items of interest.

A railway line runs through the gorge alongside the river. In one place the gorge is so narrow that the railway tracks have to be suspended above the river using an A-frame construction.
