Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Colorado

Location

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (DSNGRR) runs between the two towns after it is named, Durango and Silverton, in the highly scenic San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado.

Description

The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is probably the most famous of the Rocky Mountain preserved steam railroads.

The trains can be easily seen in both Durango (photograph; 30KB) and Silverton (photograph; 25KB). Pick up a free timetable leaflet - widely available in both towns - and time your visit so as to witness a train arrival or departure in order to obtain the full effect, which is a most impressive experience for all the senses.

In Durango you can park briefly at the McDonald's adjacent to the railroad station near the southern end of Main Street. Alternatively the parking meters on the back street which runs parallel and adjacent to the railroad tracks are an inexpensive and convenient option. Free parking in the small town of Silverton is widely available.

There are a few places on the railroad line near its southern end where trains can be seen from US550. North of Hermosa the railroad route parts from the road and doesn't rejoin it until Silverton.

Trips on the railroad are expensive and need to be booked well in advance.
