Cripple Creek, Victor, Colorado State Highway 67 North of Cañon City and Phantom Canyon

Location

From the little town of Divide on US24, Colorado State Highway 67 runs south to Cripple Creek and Victor. South of Victor it continues to cross US50 near Cañon City.

Description

The town of Cripple Creek is located in an extremely scenic area. When we visited, many years ago now, we found that it was a small but rather touristy town with a strange combination of historical buildings and shops selling gold trinkets. However, Deb Fitzmorris of Colorado Springs kindly EMailed me in Jul-98 to say things have changed:
Your description of Cripple Creek was right on the nose! Until about 7 or 8 years ago. It's a lot busier now! We voted in gambling. However, there are some strict regulations preserving the historic look of the town. So now, Cripple Creek is still a nice drive (especially in the fall when the aspen change color) but there is something to do now, when you get there!
Victor is a very small town indeed.

Colorado State Highway 67 is extremely scenic. However, between Victor and US50 the road descends through Phantom Canyon and is narrow and unpaved, with many turns and some moderately steep sections. The other sections of this road are paved and can be driven without difficulty.

A tourist railway line runs between Cripple Creek and Victor.

Pikes Peak lies between Cripple Creek and Victor (on one side) and Colorado Springs (on the other side).
