Car Rental in the USA and Canada - State Sales Tax on Car Rental Charges

Except for petrol, the stated prices of all goods and services in the USA and Canada exclude sales tax and this is added to the final bill. Car rental is no exception.

If you are using a pre-paid voucher to pay some or all of the cost of car rental, then you still have to pay the full sales tax (unless this is included in the voucher, which is rare). When computing the sales tax, the cost of each item is taken as if it had been purchased in the USA or Canada - not what you actually paid for it when you bought the voucher. This can cause the sales tax to be rather higher than you might expect.

Sales tax varies from state to state and can be as high as 15%.

In addition to sales tax, some states also impose a daily surcharge or VLF - Vehicle Licence Fee - on car rentals.
