Car Rental in the USA and Canada - State Surcharge on Car Rental Charges and VLF (Vehicle Licence Fee)

Some US states impose a state surcharge on car rentals. This is a tax, additional to the state sales tax which applies to car rental as it does to all purchases.

In California in the summer of 1998 we were charged $0.89 per day VLF (Vehicle Licence Fee), presumably a form of state surcharge. This was on an I4 (intermediate grade four door) car. In the summer of 1999, again in California and for an I4 car, the charge as $0.70 per day.

As at Dec-98 the State of Florida imposes a surcharge of $2.05 per day for all car rentals.

I do not have any information on possible state surcharges or vehicle licence fees for any other states.

I do not have any information about whether the rate of state surcharge can depend on the type or size of the rental vehicle.

If you are using a pre-paid voucher to pay some or all of the cost of car rental, then this may or may not include any state surcharge. You should check this at the time of booking. If the voucher does not cover any state surcharge then you will have to pay this locally in the USA.
