Car Rental in the USA and Canada - Returning a Rental Car

Before setting off on the final journey to the airport in order to return the car, be sure to sort out all the items which have doubtless collected on the back seat, in the glove box, in the door pockets and in the boot during your trip. You normally have to park the car in a queue and then collect all your luggage and remove it from the car very quickly, so it's well worth getting yourself organised in advance. Check you haven't left a cassette in the player or sunglasses somewhere.

Fill up the petrol tank before entering the airport area.

Make sure you have the rental agreement to hand.

If the car rental company's depot is in the airport area, follow the signs to it. The free maps which are available in car rental depot offices whenever you pick up a car always clearly indicate the location of the depot.

Once you arrive at the depot you will normally have to park the car in a line of cars and be expected to vacate it quickly. Make sure you have all your belongings.

Normally, you then proceed to the depot's office. However, sometimes the entire return transaction takes place outside beside the car, particularly if there are no complications.

If you incurred any expenses while on the road, such as having to replace a blown tyre, present your invoices in order to claim back the money.

Take the free shuttle bus from the depot to the relevant terminal. Most American and Canadian airports have separate terminals for each group of airlines, so the shuttle bus driver will need to ask you which airline you need. If you will be taking an international flight then you might need to go to the airport's International Terminal rather than the terminal for your airline's US internal flights.
