Car Rental in the USA and Canada - Petrol (Gas) Options and Refuelling Charge
Rental cars are always full of petrol when you pick them up.
Most car rental companies offer three options regarding petrol:
- Return the car with a full tank of petrol. This is always by far the least expensive option, although car rental company sales clerks and notices in car rental depots may falsely claim otherwise. This is also the most convenient option.
- Pre-pay the car rental company for a tank of gas and return the car nearly empty. This is a more expensive option.
- Return the car less than full and pay a re-fuelling charge. This is an extremely expensive option as the refuelling charge often exceeds $3 per gallon.
Alamo have recently introduced a new policy with regard to petrol. They now charge your credit card for a full tank of petrol when you pick up the car and then submit a credit card credit if you return the car full.
