Car Rental in the USA and Canada - Airport Usage Fee

I have seen some reports that at some airports in the USA and Canada an airport usage fee is imposed on all car rentals and that this can be quite a considerable amount.

I have never encountered such a fee but in recent years we have always rented with Alamo, whose depots tend to be outside the airport area. Perhaps these fees are only charged by operators whose depots lie inside the airport area.

There is never a charge for the free shuttle buses operated by each car rental company to ferry their customers between the airport terminals and their depots. Or, perhaps to be more accurate, no fee is ever charged when actually using these buses but the cost is of course included in the overall rental charge, though usually not shown as a separate item.
