Car Rental in the USA and Canada - Additional Driver Charge

The basic car rental charge only allows the person taking out the rental to drive the car. You have to pay a fee directly to the car rental company for any additional drivers. This is typically around $5 per additional driver per day as at May-98. One company quotes a rate of CDN$3.50 per day per additional driver in Canada (early 2000).

I have never been too clear if a payment for an additional driver is required in order to permit the husband or wife of the main driver (the person taking out the rental) to drive. Different car rental companies may have different policies in this regard.

I believe that when renting a car from Alamo in California and Nevada there is no charge for additional drivers, but I suggest you check this.

Some car rental companies require each additional driver to have a credit card in their own name, in the same way as the main driver. I don't think a debit card would be sufficient, for the same reasons as it is not sufficient for the main driver.
