Acadia and The Cajuns

Acadia was the name given to a region of eastern Canada, now parts of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, colonised by the French in the early 1600's.

Acadia passed into British hands in the 1700's, and in 1755 the British colonial authorities removed the Acadians to other British colonies. A major group were moved to the southern part of the present-day American state of Louisiana and their descendants are the Cajuns, a corruption of "Arcadians".

The present-day Cajun region of Louisiana is centred around the town of Lafayette.

The word Cajun should not be confused with the Spanish word Cajon.
