John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Ukiah, California

Location

Ukiah is on US101, about ninety miles north of San Francisco. It lies some way inland from the coast.

Description

Ukiah is a centre for the surrounding farming region. It has a good range of motels, shops and restaurants. It is a good choice for a lunchtime or overnight stop.

On the other side of the main road from our motel in Ukiah was the town's small airport. It was quite an experience watching the little planes take off and land. The planes stopped once it got dark, so the noise was not a problem at night.

Willets and the Skunk Train

Although we only drove through without stopping, the nearby town of Willets, about twenty-three miles north of Ukiah, also looked to be a pleasant place.

A road and a tourist railway line, the delightfully named Skunk Train, runs between Willets and the (in our opinion) far less attractive town of Fort Bragg on the coast. Apparently the railroad got its name from the smell produced by its locomotives.
