Angeles Crest Highway - California State Highway 2 Over The San Gabriel Mountains And Through The Angeles National Forest, California

Location

The San Gabriel Mountains lie immediately to the north of Los Angeles, and separate it from the Mojave Desert.

The Angeles Crest Highway, California State Highway 2, runs from La Cañada Flintridge, just north of Glendale and Pasadena, over the San Gabriel Mountains and through the Angeles National Forest. Because of the tilde (~) over the n, Cañada should be pronounced "Canyada".

Description

Highway 2 is a turning off the Foothills Boulevard, which is a normal heavily built up part of Los Angeles. Within just a few hundred yards up Highway 2 you are in a different world. You might be high in the Sierra Nevada Mountains or even in the middle of Colorado. There is hardly any traffic, no commercial buildings - just a few occasional houses in the forest. The road climbs up over the mountains and the views steadily improve.

If you have some time to spare, this road is well worth taking.

My thanks to Alvin Chiu of Glendale, California for informing me that:

Highway 2 is commonly (or at least, locally) known as the Angeles Crest Highway.
