Salton Sea, California

Location

The Salton Sea is a large lake in the very south of California, between Anza-Borrego Desert State Park and Imperial Valley, south of Joshua Tree National Park.

Description

The Salton Sea was formed in the early 1900's when the Colorado River broke through an embankment near Yuma, Arizona. Initially the lake covered an area of about 450 square miles, but due to evaporation its current size is considerably less that that.

The lake is not particularly scenic, but it is worth a look if you are in the area. There are a small number of marina-like establishments, but due to the lake decreasing in size they are now some way from the shore.

The surface of the lake is 235 feet below sea level.
