Mother Lode, California

The Mother Lode is the hundred mile long stretch of gold-bearing quartz which runs roughly north-south along part of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California.

From north to south the Mother Lode runs through the following counties: Nevada, Placer, El Dorado, Amador, Calaveras, Tuolumne and Mariposa.

California State Highway 49 runs through the southern part of this highly scenic area and presumably its road number was chosen to commemorate the California Gold Rush of 1849.

Mother Lode is sometimes spelt as one word, Motherlode, but I do not know if this is an officially correct alternative or not.
