Metro Rail And Metrolink - Los Angeles California Area Public Transport Systems
Dash And LADOT
Dash is a local bus service operated by LADOT, Los Angeles Department Of Transportation.
Metro Rail
Metro Rail is a subway (underground railway)/light railway/tram system in the Los Angeles area. It is operated by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), who also operate local bus services in the area.
The Metro Rail lines are as follows (only a few stations are listed to indicate the lines' general routes):
- Blue (B) Line: light railway/tram. 7th Street/Metro Centre, Imperial/Wilmington, Long Beach area. Passes through Vernon, Huntington Park, South Gate, Watts, Compton, Carson and Long Beach.
- Gold (C) Line: under construction; opens summer 2003. Los Angeles Union Station to Pasadena area.
- Green Line (D) Line: light railway/tram. Redondo Beach area, Aviation (free shuttle to and from Los Angeles International Airport), Imperial/Wilmington, Norwalk area (I-105/I-605 interchange). Passes through Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, Lennox, Inglewood, Watts, Lynwood, Downey and Norwalk. Between Norwalk and Aviation this line runs for about 17 miles along the median (central reservation) of the Glenn Anderson (Century) Freeway (I-105). There are vague plans to eventually build a branch of this line to Los Angeles International Airport.
- Red (A) Line: subway (underground railway). Los Angeles Union Station, 7th Street/Metro Centre, Wilshire/Vermont; then one short branch to Wilshire Western and another much longer branch to Hollywood/Vine, Universal City and North Hollywood.
Metrolink
Metrolink is a commuter railway system in the Los Angeles area, operate by the Southern California Regional Rail Authority. Metrolink commenced operation in 1993. It consists of seven routes and a total route mileage of 507 miles in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
Most of Metrolink's routes radiate out from Los Angeles Union Station, as follows:
- 91 Line (heads east): Los Angeles Union Station, Commerce, Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs, Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange, Anaheim Canyon, West Corona, North Main Corona (new station, may not be open yet), Riverside – La Sierra, Riverside – Downtown, San Bernardino. This line's name comes from the fact that it roughly parallels that of California state highway 91. Does not operate on Saturdays or Sundays. An undated unofficial map marked this line as the "Los Angeles - Fullerton - Riverside" line so perhaps that is an alternative name.
- Antelope Valley Line (heads north): Los Angeles Union Station, Glendale, Burbank, Sun Valley, Sylmar/San Fernando, Newhall, Santa Clarita, Via Princessa, Vincent Grade/Acton, Lancaster. Does not operate on Sundays. An undated unofficial map marked this line as the "Santa Clarita Line" so perhaps that is an alternative name.
- IEOC (Inland Empire/Orange County Line): Oceanside, San Clemente, San Juan Capistrano, Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, Irvine, Tustin, Santa Ana, Orange, Anaheim Canyon, West Corona, North Maine Corona (new station, may not be open yet), Riverside - La Sierra, Riverside - Downtown, San Bernardino. Does not operate on Saturdays or Sundays. This is the only line which does not originate at Los Angeles Union Station.
- Orange County Line (heads southeast): Los Angeles Union Station, Commerce, Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs, Fullerton, Anaheim, Orange, Santa Ana, Tustin, Irvine, Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Oceanside. Does not operate on Saturdays or Sundays.
- Riverside Line (heads east): Los Angeles Union Station, Montebello/Commerce, Industry, Downtown Pomona, East Ontario, Pedley, Riverside – Downtown. Does not operate on Saturdays or Sundays.
- San Bernardino Line (heads east): Los Angeles Union Station, California State University Los Angeles, El Monte, Baldwin Park, Covina, Pomona (North), Claremont, Montclair, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, Fontana, Rialto, San Bernardino. Operates seven days a week. This is Metrolink's busiest line.
- Ventura County Line (heads west): Los Angeles Union Station, Glendale, Burbank, Burbank Airport, Van Nuys, Northridge, Chatsworth, Simi Valley, Moorpark, Camarillo, Oxnard, Montalvo (new station, may not be open yet). Does not operate on Saturdays or Sundays.

Unfortunately the only map of the Metrolink system that I could find on this site was in part of a Shockwave animation and therefore not easy to save. Verified Mar-03.
