Marin County and the Marin Peninsula, near San Francisco, California
Location
The Marin Peninsula, the southern part of Marin County, is the northern of the two peninsulas which nearly enclose San Francisco Bay.
Description
Muir Woods National Monument and Mount Tamalpais are both located on the southern part of the Marin Peninsula, as is one section of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
The small tourist towns of Sausalito and Tiburon are on the eastern (bay) side of Marin peninsula. While in our opinion these towns are of little or no interest in themselves, the passenger ferry which runs from Tiburon across the bay to the city of San Francisco is a very convenient option if you don't want the hassle of driving and parking in the city itself while sightseeing. When we used the ferry many years ago it dropped passengers on the Embarcadero near the bottom of Market Street. However, the current edition of the Rand McNally Road Atlas suggests that the ferry now runs to a point much further north, close to Fisherman's Wharf. You can use the cable cars and underground railway system to get around the city.
For details of the excellent viewpoints north of the Golden Gate Bridge please refer to that page.
