John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Central Valley, California

California's Central Valley runs roughly north-north-west to south-south-east for about four hundred miles. It lies between the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the east and the Coast Ranges to the west.

The northern part of the Central Valley, roughly north of San Francisco, is the Sacramento Valley.

The southern part is the San Joaquin Valley (pronounced san wa-keen).

The entire Central Valley is intensively farmed. Fruit is the main crop in the south, while vegetables form the main crop in the slightly cooler north.

Many immigrants from Mexico work in the fields of the Central Valley.

According to one source, the Central Valley is the largest valley in the USA.
