From Las Vegas, proceed west on Charleston Boulevard, which crosses The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard) fairly near its north end. Charleston Boulevard is the next major road north of Sahara Avenue. From I-15, take exit 41 onto Charleston Boulevard, heading west. Charleston Boulevard becomes Nevada State Highway 159 once you leave Las Vegas.
For a fuller experience, take the thirteen mile one-way loop drive off Nevada State Highway 159. The entrance to this road is north of the exit. There is a visitor centre close to the start of the loop road. The loop road is paved.
There are various stopping points and overlooks along the loop road and also a picnic area. From the loop road there are also two short spur roads, one of which leads to another picnic area.
As well as the desert and mountain scenery, Red Rock Canyon also offers a variety of fascinating desert vegetation and wildlife, including many species of birds.
There are a number of hiking trails of various lengths, ranging from less than a mile to fifteen miles.
Red Rock Canyon makes a most refreshing change from the casinos of Las Vegas.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area was previously called Red Rock Canyon Recreation Lands. Despite the change of name it continues to be administered by the Bureau of Land Management.
