BLM Canyonlands Overlooks, Utah - Needles Overlook and Anticline Overlook

Location and Description

The BLM (Bureau of Land Management) maintains two overlooks in the Canyonlands area. Neither of these lie within Canyonlands National Park.

To reach these overlooks from Moab, take US191 south past the junction with Utah State Highway 46, then take the signposted road heading west.

Some way along, this road divides for the roads to the two overlooks, left for the Needles Overlook, right for the Anticline Overlook. The road to the Needles Overlook is paved. From the divide, the road to the Anticline Overlook is unpaved.

From the parking area at the end of the Needles Overlook road, you need to take a short trail of a few hundred yards to the overlook itself, which provides a most impressive view - well worth the drive. This trail isn't too obviously marked, and you may end up at a viewpoint giving you less than the full view; be sure to explore a bit to find the best viewpoint.

We haven't visited the Anticline Overlook, which on the opposite side of the Colorado River to Dead Horse Point State Park.

According to Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary the word "anticline" means "an arch-like fold dipping outwards from the fold-axis" (which isn't really much of an explanation).

Entrance Fees

In the summer of 1999 there were no entrance fees for these overlooks.
