John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Osoyoos, British Columbia

Location

Osoyoos is just over the border from the USA, very roughly halfway in east-west terms across British Columbia, at the junction of Highway 3 which runs east-west and Highway 97 which runs north-south. Highway 97 becomes US97 in the USA.

Description

Osoyoos is on the Okanagan River, but it is probably not normally described as being in the Okanagan Valley in the same sense as Penticton, Kelowna and Vernon, where the river widens to form a number of large lakes.

Highway 3 drops down from the hills on either side of the valley to the town of Osoyoos, giving excellent views over the town and surrounding area in both cases. It crosses the river, which is wide enough at this point to be called Osoyoos lake, by means of a narrow causeway which was created naturally, I think.

Some idea of the climate here is indicated by the presence of a banana plantation on the eastern side of the town.

We have not investigated restaurants or motels in Osoyoos but on passing through it seemed to have a good selection of both. UPDATE: In response to this comment Mayor Tom Shields sent me the following invitation: Yes, we have excellent motels and restaurants... next time stop in and try one.
