John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Airports - Introduction

Most large airports in the USA and Canada have separate terminals for each airline or group of airlines. Many airports also have separate international terminals with immigration and customs facilities.

At many airports there are separate levels of buildings and roads for arrivals and departures.

While large airports are always marked on road maps, the access roads are unfortunately often omitted or ambiguous. The detailed maps available on the online map web sites are often more useful than printed maps.

Nowadays car rental companies tend to not have any desks in airport terminals. Instead, you should take the relevant company's shuttle bus to their depot, where the rental negotiation process is carried out.

Car rental companies' depots are increasingly likely to be sited off the main airport site. It is well worth visiting the relevant rental car company's web site and discovering the address of the depot at the airport in question, then visiting one of the online map web sites for route planning purposes. All car rental companies provide free maps showing the locations of the depots. These are very useful when returning the car at the end of the holiday. In particular, look out for "Rental Car Return" signs when approaching the airport area.

The price of food and drinks in airports tends to be very expensive in all countries, including the USA and Canada. It is very wise to purchase any required drinks and snacks in a normal supermarket outside the airport beforehand for consumption while waiting for a departing flight.

According to a news story on BBC Ceefax on 5-Jan-04, 115 airports in the USA handle international flights. There are many other smaller airports which only handle domestic flights.
