John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Denver International Airport, Colorado (DEN)

Denver's old Stapleton Airport has been replaced by the new Denver International Airport, because Stapleton only had five major runways and was running out of capacity. (For comparison, Heathrow has two runways and Gatwick has one.) According to an item in USA Today 26-Jun-03, Denver International has recently opened a sixth runway which at 16,000 feet is the longest in North America. The length is required due to the altitude (Denver is the Mile High City).

Like Stapleton, the new airport is located northeast of Denver, but much further out.

Some years ago British Airways operated a direct flight from Gatwick (London) to Denver, replacing a similar service previously operated by Continental. I do not know if this service is still in operation, and if so whether it runs daily.

Although Denver is a very convenient location for exploring the Rocky Mountains, remember that car rental and CDW rates are considerably higher in Colorado than in California. For exploring the southwest, Los Angeles may therefore be a better choice of airport.
